20th Century Fox which was trying to revive the 1968 epic science fiction film, Planet of the Apes, has announced June 24, 2011 as the release date for its prequel, Rise of the Apes. Way before it made the Tim Burton version in 2001, Fox was trying to make this film and has spent millions of dollars and plenty of time in developing a way to re-introduce talking monkeys to audiences.
The film will be set in present day San Francisco and will deal with man’s own experiments with genetic engineering, which leads to the development of intelligence in apes and the inception of a war for supremacy. Unlike the past films where costumed actors played apes, this film will have computer generated photorealistic apes.
The studio has involved special effects company WETA Digital, co-owned by Peter Jackson, to create the apes for the film.
The screenplay has been written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, who also are producing it along with Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark for Chernin Entertainment. The film will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rupert Wyatt who has made prison break film, The Escapist.
